Gender neutral baby names are on the rise in the United States. According to the website Names.org, 17% of babies born were given unisex names. Compare that with about 8% in the 1980s.

The website analyzed data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) to predict which gender neutral names will be the most popular in 2024. Last year, Logan was in the top spot. But this year, Logan fell to number three.

Here is Names.org's top 10 list:

  1. Dylan
  2. Avery
  3. Logan
  4. Carter
  5. Riley
  6. Parker
  7. Rowan
  8. Cameron
  9. Angel
  10. Kai

Gender Neutral Names Across the U.S.

Geographically speaking, the data from Names.org shows there is not one area of the country where there are many more gender neutral names than other parts.

According to the website, during the 1900s, gender neutral names were the most popular in the southeast part of the country. While it is still pretty common in the southeast, gender neutral names have grown in the midwest and Pacific Northwest.

Louisiana takes the top spot with 17.5% of babies given gender neutral names. Rhode Island has the fewest number of babies with unisex names at 9.1%.

Do Nicknames Count as Gender Neutral Names?

When it comes to gender neutral nicknames, that's a bit more difficult to analyze. The SSA only tracks given names, not nicknames. Because of that, Names.org says it's very likely gender neutral names are even more common than the data can show.

For example, Charlie is a gender neutral name that can be used every day as a nickname for both Charles and Charlotte. The same goes for Alex as a nickname for both Alexander and Alexandra.

Some other gender neutral nicknames:

  • Terry (Terrence, Teresa)
  • Bobbie (Robert, Roberta)
  • Jackie (Jack, Jacqueline)
  • Chris (Christopher, Christian, Christine, Christina)
