Pregnancy The Best Maternity Swimsuits to Help You Feel Great in and Out of the Water Experts help us pick the best options for comfortable, supportive swimwear during pregnancy and beyond. By Jessica Booth Updated on July 29, 2024 Medically reviewed by Alyssa Dweck, MS, MD, FACOG Fact checked by Jessica Wrubel In This Article View All In This Article Our Favorites Our Review Process Factors to Consider When Buying a Maternity Swimsuit The Right Fit When to Buy Who We Are Parents / Brian Kopinski Whether you’re hitting the beach, pool, or waterpark, swimming during pregnancy can be a great way to cool off or get some exercise. When your go-to swimsuit starts getting too tight, that means it’s time for a maternity swimsuit. While maternity swimsuits have a reputation for being frumpy, we found plenty of options that are stylish and trendy. The best maternity swimsuits have thoughtful design details and added support to make you more comfortable. “A [person's] body is changing every single day throughout their pregnancy journey, so swimwear that can grow with their evolving shape, while still making them feel comfortable and confident, is key,” says Aubre Winters-Casiano, founder of Sweat Sessions Studio and a pre/post-natal fitness instructor who is currently in her second trimester of pregnancy. When searching for the best maternity swimsuits, we tried to find something for everyone's wish list, whether that's a basic one-piece, a bikini, underwire for a large bust, or something that can be worn into the nursing and postpartum period. The right suit will last throughout your pregnancy, and maybe even afterward, with a fit that is comfortable and stretchy without skimping on style. Our Favorites Best Overall: Summersalt The Maternity Cinched Current Swimsuit Best Budget: Summer Mae Maternity Swimsuit Best for Lap Swimming: EQ Swimwear Harmony Maternity Swimsuit Best One-Piece: Cupshe Maternity Spaghetti Strap One-Piece Swimsuit Best Two-Piece: Kindred Bravely Crossover Maternity & Nursing Bikini Top and High Rise Bikini Bottom Best Plus-Size: PinkBlush Black Ruffle Trim Ruched One-Piece Maternity Plus Swimsuit Best for Large Bust: Cache Coeur Underwired Maternity Swimsuit Best Rash Guard: Oceanlily Maternity Ruched Long Sleeve Rash Guard Best Sporty: Seraphine Active Maternity & Nursing Swimsuit Best Splurge: Hunza G Square Neck Swim Best Maternity Swimsuit Summersalt The Maternity Cinched Current PHOTO: Summersalt View on Summersalt.com Why We Like It This Summersalt swimsuit is our top choice for its comfort, support, and versatility. It’s made of a super soft, stretchy, ribbed fabric that feels nice against your skin and offers just enough compression without being too tight. Some ruching on the sides and cinch ties at the back of the bust and at the waist give this an adjustable fit that grows with you and your bump as your pregnancy progresses. The empire waist also offers plenty of space for your belly regardless of which trimester you’re in. A classic one-piece with a square neckline and fairly wide straps, this suit will never go out of style (meaning it will work for more than one pregnancy), and it looks just as good paired with denim shorts as it does on its own. The butt is full coverage, the neckline doesn’t dip too low, and you can even add a matching swim skirt if you’re looking for more coverage. And it doesn’t obviously look like a maternity swimsuit, so it will work for the postpartum period as well. But Take Note We wish the colors and sizes weren’t so limited—this swimsuit is only available in black or navy blue in sizes 2 to 14. The material is a little on the thin side, and the bust isn’t super supportive. The Details: Sizes: 2–14Style: One-pieceMaterial: 92% polyamide, 8% elastane Summer Mae Maternity One Piece Bathing Suit PHOTO: Amazon $39 at Amazon Why We Like It While most maternity swimsuits can run anywhere between $50 and $150, this Amazon bestseller comes in at under $40, making it our favorite option for those looking for a more affordable pick. It’s available in 12 different solid colors and is made of a soft, stretchy mix of nylon and spandex. Ruching on the side offers enough slack to allow this to grow with your bump. The bra top includes removable pads that you can use as needed. We like that the buttons down the front of this suit are functional. This makes it a good option for a nursing swimsuit during the postpartum period. The straps are adjustable and have a cross-back design that gives your breasts a little extra support. Reviewers rave that this suit has great coverage, doesn’t dig into the skin, and has a soft ribbed texture. But Take Note This swimsuit seems to be lacking the belly support and thick straps found on most other maternity suits. If you have a larger bust or are further along in pregnancy, these are features you’ll likely need. Some reviewers have noted that it’s not ideal for larger bust sizes, and if you are plus-size or have a larger bust, you may want to try sizing up. The Details: Sizes: S–3XL Style: One-piece Material: 82% nylon, 18% spandex Best for Lap Swimming EQ Swimwear Harmony Lap Swimming Maternity Swimsuit PHOTO: Amazon $65 at Amazon View on Eqswimwear.com View on Swimoutlet.com Why We Like It Lap swimming is a great way to exercise during pregnancy, but you’ll need a suit that’s durable enough to withstand the wear and tear involved, while also supporting your baby bump. Thanks to its athletic cut and stretchy feel, this swimsuit is ideal for lap swimming. The high-neck, wide straps, and racerback design will keep everything in place, offer added support, and ensure you don’t have to worry about straps slipping down your shoulders while swimming. Made of lightweight nylon spandex, this suit is soft but durable and fully lined. The UPF 50+ sun protection means you can feel a little safer wearing it outside. The suit stretches with your belly and supports without feeling constrictive. It’s also quick-drying, which is great if you’re just swimming a few laps and then heading home. But Take Note The material can feel a little thin, especially in the bust area. There’s also no built-in bra, so it might be uncomfortable for those with larger breasts. We also wish there were more sizes. The Details: Sizes: S–XL Style: One-piece Material: 80% nylon, 20% spandex The 8 Best Compression Socks for Pregnancy, Tested and Expert-Approved Best One-Piece Cupshe Maternity Spaghetti Strap One-Piece Swimsuit PHOTO: Amazon $38 at Amazon $38 $28 at Target Why We Like It This one-piece is ideal for those who want comfort and support, without feeling overly modest. It has ruching on the side that allows it to grow with your belly and gives it a little bit of a looser fit that doesn’t make it too compressive. The deep V-neck triangle top makes it feel less like a maternity suit and more like just another cute swimsuit. The cups have removable pads and the straps are adjustable. It’s available in a variety of solid colors, including some really bright and fun options, and we appreciate the low price point, which makes this ideal for a suit you'll only use for one season. Reviewers note that it is comfortable and feels secure, with a flattering cut that makes it stand out a bit. But Take Note The thin straps are cute, but according to our experts, they are not ideal in terms of support. In particular, this style may not work for larger busts. The Details: Sizes: XS–XL Style: One-piece Material: 80% nylon, 20% spandex Best Two-Piece Kindred Bravely Crossover Maternity & Nursing Bikini Top and High Rise Bikini Bottom PHOTO: Kindred Bravely View on Kindredbravely.com View on Kindredbravely.com Why We Like It A bikini can be such a cute way to show off your bump, but since they offer less coverage overall, you’ll want an option that offers some support. This is our top bikini pick for its stellar reviews and supportive features. The top is available in bra cup sizes B to I, which is impressive for any swimsuit. The straps are wide and adjustable, and the top is made of a stretchy fabric that accommodates fluctuating breast sizes. Plus, the crossover design allows this to double as a convenient nursing option postpartum. The bikini bottoms have a high waist with full rear coverage. You can fold the waist down under your growing bump or pull it up to about mid-belly. It has ruching on the side for a more adjustable fit and enough give to grow with you. The whole suit is made with UPF 50 sun protection, and customers praise its durability and sturdiness. But Take Note This is only available in black or in blue and white stripes. Some feel there is excess fabric in the armpit area. The Details: Sizes: Top: S–XL in Regular (B–D) or Busty (E–I); bottoms: S–XL Style: Bikini Material: 85% recycled polyester, 15% spandex Best Plus-Size PinkBlush Black Ruffle Trim Ruched One-Piece Maternity Plus Swimsuit PHOTO: PinkBlush View on Pinkblushmaternity.com Why We Like It We love that PinkBlush offers a variety of plus-size maternity swimsuits, all of which are under $100. This popular pick provides plenty of coverage, supportive details, and a cute, flirty style. The ruffle trim makes it stand out, and the straps are adjustable or removable, in case you’re trying to avoid tan lines or looking for a strapless suit. The bust is padded, and the entire suit is double-lined, so you don’t need to worry about see-through points. The fabric is soft, and the side ruching ensures this suit can grow with you. I wore a few different PinkBlush swimsuits throughout both of my pregnancies, and I found them to be surprisingly comfortable and durable. They never felt too constrictive, and they didn’t pull or fade, even though I wore them constantly. But Take Note It’s not uncommon for the plus-size maternity swimsuits at PinkBlush to sell out fast or be out of stock, so you’ll need to order this quickly if you have your heart set on it. We also wish this one offered more support in terms of straps—the ones on this suit are very thin. Lastly, some customers have noted this runs small, so sizing up may be necessary. The Details: Sizes: 1X–3X Style: One-piece Material: 82% nylon, 18% spandex The 7 Best Maternity Pajamas for Comfort in Pregnancy and Postpartum Best for Large Bust Cache Coeur Underwired Maternity Swimsuit PHOTO: Cache Coeur View on Cachecoeur.us Why We Like It Finding swimsuits with adequate support for larger busts can be tough, but we love this option from Cache Coeur. Made with underwire and sizing that goes up to 40G/H, this is one of the few picks made to accommodate larger cup sizes. The foam cups leave you feeling lifted and stable without digging into your skin, and the straps are adjustable for additional lift. The fabric is super soft and stretchy, with plenty of ruching on the sides to fit your belly as it gets bigger. The open back and the higher-cut legs keep you from feeling too constricted. We also like that the material is made with UPF 50 for added sun protection. But Take Note We wish this had wider straps for added comfort and support. Plus, there are only two color options. The Details: Sizes: 32C/D–40G/H Style: One-pieceMaterial: 64% polyamide, 16% elastane, 14% polyester, 6% polyurethane Best Rash Guard Oceanlily Maternity Ruched Long-Sleeve Rash Guard PHOTO: Amazon $35 at Amazon Why We Like It For plenty of sun protection, extra coverage, and a sporty feel, this rash guard is a great option. It has long sleeves, a high-cut neck, and a long torso to cover your entire stomach. It’s made of UPF 50 fabric that’s breathable and lightweight, so you won’t have to worry about overheating. It can be worn when swimming and dries quickly. It’s ideal for more athletic swimming or anyone who wants to be fully covered up. Drawstring ties on either side allow you to adjust the fit as needed. And while it doesn’t feel too constrictive, it’s sized small and the company notes that you should order a size up if you want it to be a bit looser. It’s available in a few different colors and prints, some of which are short-sleeved if you’d prefer that style. But Take Note Note that this is only a rash guard top—it doesn’t come with swim bottoms, which will need to be purchased separately. It also doesn’t provide much bust support, so you may want to wear a bikini top underneath. The Details: Sizes: S–XXL Style: Rash guard tankini top Material: 85% polyester, 15% spandex Best Sporty Seraphine Active Maternity & Nursing Swimsuit PHOTO: Seraphine View on Seraphine.com Why We Like It If you're the type who doesn't just lounge by the water but would rather be up and playing or swimming laps, you’ll need something that is extra durable and keeps everything in place. This Seraphine swimsuit is made specifically with active pregnant people in mind and is just as great for exercise as it is for someone who simply wants to feel supported at the beach. This swimsuit features lots of great details to help you feel cradled and held up, including wide straps, a racerback design, and a shelf bra with padded cups. Ruching on the side is ideal for your pregnant belly, and it fits loose enough to allow movement. The contrast panels and piping make this look cute and sporty, and it has a high scoop neck. It’s also ideal for postpartum nursing with an inner modesty panel and hidden clips that allow you to breastfeed without removing your top. But Take Note The inner modesty panel, hidden nursing clips, and bra shelf can make this bathing suit look and feel a little bit bulky. The Details: Sizes: XS–XXL Style: One-pieceMaterial: 83% polyester, 17% elastane The 15 Best Maternity Leggings to Keep You Comfy, Tested and Reviewed Best Splurge Hunza G Maternity Square Neck Swim PHOTO: Hunza G View on Hunzag.com Why We Like It If you’re interested in spending a little more on a luxury suit, this option actually offers great value for money since it can take you through pregnancy and beyond. Hunza G swimsuits are made of the brand's signature crinkle fabric that stretches and molds to your body throughout pregnancy. So while the “one size” label can feel restrictive, it’s meant to stretch to fit your body grows and changes, then adjust back down to fit your postpartum body. This square neck suit offers a classic fit and style that feels timeless. The open back is cute and gives you a little freedom, the higher neck provides extra coverage, and the straps are wide enough to be supportive. It comes in a variety of colors and the fabric is comfortable and soft. Winters-Casiano recommends this brand, saying, “Hunza G doesn’t compromise on style,” and its suits have “incredible stretch.” But Take Note This suit only offers light bust support. The suit’s “one size” says it fits sizes 2–12, so it’s not made with plus-size bodies in mind. The Details: Sizes: One size (suitable for US 2–12) Style: One-piece Material: Brand’s signature crinkle fabric Most Versatile Old Navy Maternity Matching Twist-Front Cutout Nursing Swimsuit PHOTO: Old Navy View on Old Navy Why We Like It This cute Old Navy pick is proof that you don’t have to compromise on style or support to get a great maternity swimsuit at an affordable price. As of this writing, it costs about $55 and regularly goes on sale for under $40. Plus, it comes in a fun variety of colors and patterns. The twist-front keyhole cutout and deep V-neck give this suit flirty flair and the slightly quilted look of some of the solid colors further elevates the style. In terms of support, this suit offers adjustable shoulder straps for a more customized fit, removable molded cups, moderate rear coverage, and side shirring to allow it to stretch as needed. Detachable clips for easy nursing mean you can use this suit through the postpartum period. It also has UPF protection built in for sunny days. Reviewers note that it is super comfortable, functional, and feels very secure. But Take Note We wish the straps were wider for added bust support. Some customers have also noted that it feels a little loose and may run big. The Details: Sizes: XS–XXL Style: One-piece Material: 92% polyester, 8% spandex Best Tankini Rosewater Shake Nursing Tankini Swimsuit PHOTO: Cake Maternity View on Cakematernity.com Why We Like It If the prospect of pulling a wet one-piece off and on feels overwhelming given the frequency of your trips to the bathroom lately, you’ll love this Cake Maternity tankini. It offers the coverage of a one-piece with the convenience of a two-piece. The bottoms rest below the belly and have full coverage in the rear, and the top completely covers your belly. Drawstrings on the sides of the tankini are fully adjustable and really allow you to find the fit that works for you. The full-capacity bra cups are made with a larger bust in mind, fitting D-I cups. We like the hidden flexi-wire and racerback design, which offer additional support. The drop-down cups and side sling make this ideal for nursing or pumping postpartum. But Take Note While the bust is roomy enough for larger breasts, a few reviewers felt it didn’t offer enough lift. The bottoms may fit a little more snugly than the top. The Details: Sizes: S–XL Style: Tankini Material: 95% polyamide, 5% elastane The Best Pregnancy Shoes We Tested That Are Comfortable and Supportive, But Still Cute Best Full-Coverage PinkBlush Ruched Short Sleeve Maternity One-Piece Swimsuit PHOTO: PinkBlush View on Pinkblushmaternity.com Why We Like It This PinkBlush swimsuit is a great option for those looking for a little more coverage in a one-piece. The square neckline comes up to a modest height, and instead of your typical tank or spaghetti straps, it has short sleeves that come down almost to the elbow. The upper back is a little open, but the rear should offer moderate to full coverage. The ruffle trim, puff sleeves, and light blue color make it pretty and feminine as well. Removable pads in the bust offer some extra comfort, while shirred sides allow this to work with a growing and changing belly. It’s also surprisingly versatile: if you want a suit that will easily go from the pool or beach to a restaurant or out sightseeing, this could easily double as a top under a skirt or shorts. But Take Note We wish this had more extended sizing beyond small to large. And if you’re looking for something suitable for nursing, this one probably wouldn’t work. The Details: Sizes: S–LStyle: One-piece Material: 82% polyamide, 18% elastane Best With Belly Support Blanqi Maternity Belly Support High Waist Swim Briefs PHOTO: Blanqi View on Blanqi.com Why We Like It As you get further along in your pregnancy, you’ll find that wearing something that actively supports your belly can offer some much-needed relief. These high-waisted bikini bottoms do exactly that. They have a hidden flocking detail that sits directly underneath your bump and provides a bit of lift. That built-in support can be a game-changer, especially if you’re wearing the suit for several hours. The shirred sides make this swim bottom really flexible and it can easily be pulled over your bump. Plus, the rear offers full coverage. The fabric is durable and functional; it’s chlorine-, oil-, and sunscreen-resistant and has built-in UPF 50 protection. Keep in mind that you’ll need to purchase the matching adjustable maternity top separately. But Take Note At $88, these swimsuit bottoms cost more than some one-pieces (add $58 for the top), so it’s on the pricier side. The Details: Sizes: S–XL Style: Bikini Material: 80% nylon, 20% spandex The 9 Best Swim Goggles for Kids to Protect Their Eyes in the Water Best for Postpartum Kindred Bravely Nursing & Maternity One Piece Wrap Swimsuit PHOTO: Nordstrom $23 at Kindredbravely.com Why We Like It A suit that seamlessly takes you from the first trimester all the way to the fourth, this Kindred Bravely option is great for your baby bump and for nursing. The wrap style is both cute and functional, with a side tie and crossover cut that offers support and makes breastfeeding access a breeze. The straps are adjustable, and there’s a shelf bra for added support, as well as ruching on the sides that can expand with you. Thanks to the striped print, the shirring isn’t as obvious. This is great for larger busts since it’s available in cup sizes B to I. Plus, the “Busty” size option has wider straps for extra support. It’s fully lined, has UPF 50 protection, and provides full coverage on the rear. A cute ruffle along the neckline makes this one more fun. But Take Note This suit has a fairly deep V-neck, so if you’re looking for a more modest suit, this may not be it. You may find that the fit is a bit off if you have a long torso. The Details: Sizes: S–1X in Regular (B–D) or Busty (E–I) Style: One-piece Material: 85% recycled polyester, 15% spandex Our Review Process When looking for the best maternity swimsuits, we used our own personal experience as mothers and consulted several experts who told us exactly what features to look for in maternity swimsuits. We considered swimsuits that would work well for different stages of pregnancy and even into the postpartum period, assessing each product's features, design, coverage, support, sun protection, value, and aesthetics. We also wanted to champion products at a range of price points, styles, and coverage preferences. Our Experts We spoke with experts to learn more about what to look for when shopping for a maternity swimsuit, especially beneficial supportive features. We also asked about their own product recommendations based on their experience. Aubre Winters-Casiano is the founder of Sweat Sessions Studio and a pre/post-natal fitness instructor and breathwork teacher currently in her second trimester of pregnancy. Caitlyn Tivy, PT, DPT, OCS, is an advocate for women’s and queer health and a medical advisor at Aeroflow Breastpumps. Factors to Consider When Buying a Maternity Swimsuit Pregnancy Features: Maternity swimsuits often come with special features meant to make you more comfortable. Space to grow with you and your belly is important, so look for design details like ruching on the side or adjustable ties. Winters-Casiano says a wrap-style bust can be versatile since it can take you through the postpartum and nursing periods. Keep in mind that maternity suits and postpartum suits will differ in terms of support: “Maternity swimsuits are going to focus a little bit more on support for the belly and breasts, whereas a postpartum/nursing suit is going to focus more on ease of access to the breasts for nursing,” Tivy explains. Style: Maternity swimsuits are available in one-piece, tankini, or two-piece, in a wide variety of designs. The style you choose depends on your preference and comfort level. There are plenty of options for modest styles and more revealing looks. You may even want different styles for different occasions, such as a sporty one-piece for lap swimming and a fashionable tankini for the beach.Fit and Sizing: Don’t mistake an overly tight fit for extra support. Tight suits are a no-go, Tivy says, explaining, “It can be uncomfortable and restrict blood flow. There tends to be a lot of swelling in the lower half of the body during pregnancy, so avoid anything that really heavily restricts around the hips to help prevent constriction of swelling.” If you buy a suit knowing you’ll wear it when you’re further along in pregnancy, make sure it is on the looser side. Also, consider the fabric. Winters-Casiano recommends something super stretchy so that it grows with you. Comfort and Support: Breast support is essential, especially if you have large breasts. Look for underwire, cups, and built-in shelf bras. Both Tivy and Winters-Casiano recommend avoiding thin straps, which won’t offer enough support for your breasts. A racerback design is a great option as it creates more stability for the breasts, Tivy says. “If you’ve got a lot of pressure on the shoulder straps, that can encourage you to unconsciously slouch forward and create a lot of neck and back pain and restrict the breasts,” Tivy notes. Our experts also recommend suits with built-in belly bump support.Sun Protection: Your skin is extra sensitive during pregnancy, which means you could be more prone to sunburn. Look for swimsuits made with UPF 50 protection. One-piece suits and tankinis provide more coverage than bikinis. Additional pieces like long-sleeve rashguards or robe-like cover-ups are important for extended sun exposure. Always be sure to wear sunscreen and take breaks from the sun. How to Find the Right Fit for Maternity Swimsuits Generally, you purchase maternity clothing in your pre-pregnancy size. Check the size chart at each retailer to find the best possible fit, and read product reviews to find out if customers say the fit tends to be on the small or large side (though sometimes they say both, so take these with a grain of salt). Ensure you understand return policies so you can exchange sizes as needed or return items without incurring additional fees. Trying on swimsuits is always the best way to find the right fit. Look for something with wide, supportive straps, and opt for a suit that is a little bit more on the loose side since you don’t want it to be too tight and restrictive. What’s the Best Time During Pregnancy to Buy a Maternity Swimsuit? There’s no right or wrong time to buy a maternity suit. You should likely buy one when you feel like your regular swimsuit is beginning to get too tight or isn’t supporting your breasts or belly enough. If you are buying a suit earlier in your pregnancy, be sure to pick something that can grow with you. If you’re buying one close to your due date, you may want to look for a swimsuit you can wear into the postpartum and nursing period so you get your money’s worth.
