The name Tyler is of Old French origin, from the world tieulier, meaning "tiler" or "tile maker." In Middle English, the spelling became Tyler. The name was used for a person who laid tiles or bricks and often as an occupational name for a housebuilder. 

Tyler is also the name given to the office of the outer guard of a Masonic Lodge. All lodges appoint a Tyler to stand guard outside the door. This junior officer is in charge of preventing ineligible masons from entering, preparing the room for meetings, supplying regalia and equipment, and sometimes acting as the caretaker of the premises.

Tyler entered the Social Security Administration’s top 1,000 names for boys list as No. 834 in 1900, the first year the list was made available. It promptly fell off the list the next year and returned about a decade later, only to fall off again. The name Tyler would not return to the top 1,000 list until 1945 when it barely hung on as No. 992.

From then on, however, Tyler steadily climbed the list, moving about 100 spots or more every decade. It finally peaked at No. 5 in 1993 and 1994 and stayed in the top 100 for the next couple of decades. The name Tyler has since decreased in popularity and was ranked at No. 177 in 2023.

Tyler first hit the top 1,000 names for girls list in 1984. Its popularity as a girl name peaked in 1993 at No. 238. In 2023, Tyler ranked as the 874th most popular name for girls.

The popularity of the name Tyler in the 1990s and early 2000s might be attributed to several factors. Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, was a household name then. The cult-favorite movie Fight Club, which came out in 1999, also featured a character named Tyler.
